What size standby generator does my house need?
The size that runs what you actually need in an outage, which is usually the HVAC, the refrigerator, the well or sump pump, lighting and outlets — not every load in the house at once. A load calculation sizes it; a whole-house unit costs considerably more than one sized for the essentials and is often more than a house needs. Natural gas or propane decides the fuel.
How does a standby generator work during an outage?
Automatically. A transfer switch senses the utility power dropping, starts the generator within seconds and switches the house onto it; when utility power returns it switches back and shuts the generator down. It runs a short self-test weekly so it is known to work before it is needed. Portable generators do none of this and should never be connected to house wiring without a proper inlet and switch.
